Image based (GLUE) channels

Image based channels

junaio GLUE (or SCAN) mostly refers to junaio's capabilities to recognize images and enhance images and pictures with virtual content without the need of using special markers. This is also called 2D Natural Feature Tracking (NFT).

Additionally junaio also supports 3D object tracking, “old-school” marker tracking and 2D image recognition (Local Visual Search) - in general: all tracking technologies the metaio SDK provides.

With junaio GLUE Channels you can attach or "glue" virtual 3D models, images or movies to any real world object. Those 3D models can be linked to sound or video files as well as websites or images. Also additional textual information can be given or the 3D models can be linked with phone numbers, email addresses or more.

junaio GLUE is available for free for every developer and can be integrated in your channels and be made available for all junaio users. To enrich flyers, packaging, books, magazines, etc. with junaio, you have to have an image of the surface to be enriched with virtual content, which can be used as reference or "pattern". junaio GLUE has been set up to work with 3D models (see 3D content) or as trigger.

Metaio Creator

The easiest way to create an image based channel is through metaio Creator. It provides an easy to use GUI that lets you drag and drop your content onto your patterns.

Creator will also automatically analyze and optimize your patterns.

To get started, just have a look at the creator tutorials.

Tracking Configuration

junaio supports all tracking options the metaio sdk provides. A complete overview is provided on the tracking configuration page.

As mentioned above, Creator is the best choice to create the tracking configuration for your images. Also if you're not planning on using metaio creator for your channel development, it can at least generate the tracking configuration for you.

Other than that, there are also a few predefined tracking configurations, that you can use:

Instant Tracking

It is also possible to configure junaio (and the SDK) to take the current camera frame and start tracking right away. This allows you to create experiences that will work in a variety of surroundings, without requiring a specific pattern.

To start instant tracking, use one of the following:

  • arel.Scene.startInstantTracking(arel.Tracking.INSTANT2D);
    Will use the camera frame as it is and start tracking
  • arel.Scene.startInstantTracking(arel.Tracking. INSTANT2DG);
    Will warp the camera frame according to gravity and start tracking
  • arel.Scene.startInstantTracking(arel.Tracking. INSTANT3D);
    Will use SLAM to create a 3D point cloud of the environment and start tracking
